In 1999 Janet set up Adult Supported Living so that she could play a part in meeting a need in the local community for people with a mental health condition or learning disability to have the opportunity to live with more independence. Following a period of employment with a local charity Janet saw that more provision of accommodation with support would be of great value to people in Harrogate who are in need of help but not requiring residential care. ASL began with a desire to implement an ethos that enables the right of personal choice and community inclusion along with a sense of personal responsibility and autonomy for a service user over their own life and this continues to this day. Along with this ethos Janet was very keen that ASL houses were established with an intention of creating a family atmosphere. This has resulted in an element of peer support, togetherness, making friends, tolerance, helping each other, and an understanding of how to live with, be around and get along with others. ASL has found that this type of environment has proved hugely beneficial to service users in comparison with living alone.
Following a change in career path Rob joined ASL in 2009 as a support worker and went on to become assistant manager. Then in 2017 after the achievement of the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care in Adults Residential Management he became the registered manager. Rob enjoys team development and is keen on encouraging an inclusive team atmosphere where all staff members can flourish, grow and make the most of their attributes and contribute their ideas to maximise ASL’s support potential. This same desire to maximise potential applies to the service users as Rob aspires to enable them to achieve a foundation of structure, independence and meaningful activity in their lives that becomes a basis for a fulfilling, purposeful quality of life. Recently Rob has been working on introducing a mental health recovery approach that will enable ASL to provide a shorter term, interim opportunity for service users to progress to a more independent living environment.
